Debugging 365 using the info class

 A good and often used trick to use when hunting down bugs is putting a break point in the info class in the method add() and examining the call stack when an error is thrown causing the add method in the info class to be called for updating the infolog.

However sometimes when you are debugging in Visual Studio the debugger will not load the symbols needed to debug in the info class.

In the old days you had to resort to the very slow "Load all modules, unless excluded" under Debugging / Symbols / Automatic symbol loading preference, which would load symbols for ALL modules.

A neat addition that Microsoft has added to the Dynamics 365 FO/SCM extension for Visual Studio (can't remember from what version at the moment), is that you can now debug with "Load only specified modules".

So when you encouter that the debugger will not load symbols for the info class do this:

1. Choose Options in the 365 Visual Studio extension
2. Go to Dynamics 365 / Debugging
3. Put a checkmark in "Debug items in the solution and items in specific packages."
4. Pick what modules you want the debugger to load symbols for (In info's case ApplicationPlatform):


5. Re-attach the debugger to the World Wide Web Publishing service

Now the debugger will only load symbols for the selected modules, and since you've included ApplicationPlatform, symbols will be loaded for the info-class, allowing you to debug by stopping at your breakpoint in the info.add method.

Supressing the infolog is often useful in D365FO when augmenting code. When augmenting code using COC (Chain Of Command), you can have new code run either before or after the code you are augmenting. This means that any infolog-messages that the standard application code does, will be shown to the user, even if your augmentation supports a scenario where there must be no infolog-messages. How do you avoid the standard application infolog-messages ? To the rescue comes temporary supression of the infolog. Indicating mandatory field in a dialog (RunBase) class.

A classical problem is indicating that a field is mandatory in a dialog, when the field is not bound to a datasource/field in a datasource. Normally fellow developers will tell you that, that is not possible. I found a way to do this. In your Runbase-based class you can implement the putToDialog-method e.g like this: protected void putToDialog() { super(); fieldMask.fieldControl().mandatory(true); } where fieldMask is a DialogField object in your dialog. This will make the field act like it was a mandatory field from a datasource in a form, showing a red-wavy line under the field, and requiring the field to have a value. Attention: Your class has to run on the client.If you set your class to run on the server, you get a run-time error, when the fieldMask.FieldControl()-call is made.

Dynamics AX 2012 ValidTimeState tables and form changing view from current to all
